I just found this great site through Gina who I met in a diabetes group on myspace. My name is Ilana and I am 38 years old. I live in the South Florida area and I am a type two diabetic. I think. I say I think because even my doctor is stumped. He actually thinks I am a borderline type one if that makes sense. To give you some history; I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my son six and a half years ago. I recall having problems getting pregnant and when I told my Doctor my family history, she told me to hold off on trying because she suspected that I was a diabetic and it could be why I was having problems getting pregnant. My mother and brother both have type two diabetes. My father has type two as well but his is due to his weight and not genetic. The Doctor was alarmed because the chance of getting diabetes with a parent is 50/50 but with a sibling is like 90%. Well, the day I found out I was actually a diabetic, I found out I was pregnant too! I was under tight control during my pregnancy and had a healthy 7 lb 1 oz son. However, three months after my son's birth, my Doctor re-tested my levels and discovered I was still in the type two range of diabetes so he started treatment. Now six years later, the diabetes has progressed to the point that now I have to take insulin shots. My Doctor would not even consider Byeda. I take Lantus Solostar, Actos Plus and Metformin. I also have high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Needless to say, I never thought I would have so many health problems in my thirties.
I am slightly overweight (okay, I could probably lose 20 pounds) and having problems trying to lose this weight but I am having difficulty. I tried everything from Atkins to Weight Watchers and still cannot get this weight off. I would appreciate any help you guys could give me.
Thanks!
