Wonderful! Sounds like you have self-control and you manage very well even if it's a lot of hard work. I was scared into diet and exercise the moment I received word that my blood sugar was too high, and got it down to normal within weeks. Not so hard for me because I was spooked, and lost my appetite for the most part which really helped. You're an inspiration, and I wish I had heard from you sooner. Anyone can get careless and develop typt II diabetes.

Hi Delia, my names Kate: i have been a diabetic for the last 12 years - most of which i have had brittle diabetes. I have had numerous bouts of ketoacidosis accosiated with self neglect and depression. For years i have kept myselff with some ketones but not enough to be hospitalised. I have resented this illness so much and chose not to talk to my family about it - just muddle through. Over the past 2 years i have experienced a slow turn around: largely to do with a scare re my eye sight and also because i was under the care of a fabulous new consultant. I have made baby steps. My improved control has improved my mood and i am reducing my anti depressants for the first time in 10 years. This illness can feel lonely and like a prison sentence. When you feel down it is easy to neglect yourself but as you know it only makes everything worse. Try to give yourself an acheiveable goal each day - something you can do to make tou feel positive (i astarted with just taking 2 of my 4 injections!) Try not to beat yourself down, it sounds like you have a lot of resons to keep trying, good luck and please write anytime x

Hello Liz,

Sorry to hear you stopped going to specialists. It's appalling an obese doctor is telling you that you're obese. He doesn't have the balls for a lifestyle change himself. He should talk! Anyway, 60 kg is approximately 132 pounds for 5'4". Not terribly overweight. My dietician would say to lose a few more pounds. I was prediabetic and that scared me like nothing else. I'm 4'10.5" and weigh 110 pounds. I lost over 30 pounds over the course of a year, mainly before the first 6 months and regained about 12 pounds, some in muscle weight. I took 3 terms of beginner ballet and worked out in the gym and ran outside. My dietician says I should weigh less than 100 pounds. She probably meant about 90 pounds. And she's right. I made a dramatic lifestyle change and haven't regretted it. So now I'm trying to lose about 15 pounds. Not very easy but I have to try harder. Please consider going back to a specialist and keep well.

My name is Ginny and my 8 year old daughter Chasity was diagnosed as a Type 1 on sept.15,2008.Her diagnosis came as a shock to us.We found out when she dropped a dress size in 3 months over the summer.I took her to the doctor and the doctor said she has always been healthy and he thought she was just going through a stage of being a child and drinking to much and not wanting to eat.But he said we will do some blood work to make sure.He called me at lunch time and told me her blood number was 700 she was a type 1 diabetic. The doctor called around to hospitals to fin someone to admit her.We had to go to Charlottesville,Va.Two and half hours away from where we live.Because we do not have any peditrician endocronoligists in our area. The hospital admitted her for 2 days. Her A1c at the time was 14. 3 weeks later she was at 10 and had gained her weight back. She is doing good and she is my hero. For her to go through all these changes so quickly and not to complain about anything. She has a long road ahead of her and together me and her will suceed.

Hey,
I'm Phill, from the other side of the big pond. I've been Type 1 since 1991 when I was 20, and thankfully still in good nick.
I'll be asleep when most of the discussions take place here, but I'll still keep up to date with things...!
I'm a marketing manager by day, then a cyclist, photographer, bad footballer and Dad by night. Find me on twitter (phillconnell) if you're using it!
Take care everyone,
Phill.
