Hi, I'm Glenda. My grandmother was type 1, I guess. She took 2 shots a day, if I remember correctly. She had 6 daughters and 3 son. Out of those, at least 4 of the daughters and 2 of the sons have developed type 2. My mother being one of them, was diagnosed in January of this year. She started out with her blood sugar levels over 400. I believe it was like 435, or something like that, but she is doing so good. She keeps a tight check on it and watches what she eats, and walks anywhere from 30 minutes - 90 minutes a day in 30 minute increments...Usually an hour a day. She's lost about 25 lbs and keeps her numbers anywhere from appr. 80-120 . Somewhere in there..She takes Actos.
I don't have diabetes, my blood sugar has always checked out wonderful, but I do have symptoms: I have neuropathy in both feet, I have excessive thirst at night. If I get up to go to the bathroom during the night, I am so dry, I have to have water..and when I wake up in the morning, I am so very thirsty. My wounds in recent years take longer than they used to , to heal and others.. I have been told that I am probably pre-diabetic.
I am trying to learn all that I can and make the appropriate changes.
It's good that you're not diabetic. Perhaps you should consider a dietician. Your symptoms sound pretty serious. Type II diabetes can be delayed or prevented. Are you overweight? Diet alone is not enough to stave off diabetes. Do you exercise? If you can, run in the morning on an empty stomach. Walking is good exercise, but it's not a good a workout as running. I started running down the length of one block, then around the corner a few days later. I just gradually built that up. Experts say that diet in conjunction with exercise works best. If you're already running, do you cut back on carbs and junk food? I had amazing results when the threat of pre-diabetes forced me to an immediate lifestyle change.
My name is Dana and I am 29 year old SAHM, I have type 1 diabetes. My case is rare. I got type 1 for not being on insulin long enough and got a critical case of ketoacidosis, so instead of a slow virus, I got a very fast acting virus that caused my body to no longer make any insulin. I am awaiting for the ok to order my omnipod pump, who I am calling me podnuh and soon will be trained on it! My husband is from Alabama and I am from Washington State, we met online in 98' and have a 2 year old daugther who I call my stinker bug! I hope to meet and become friends with more d's out there. I love to chat or am a good listener. I am here for anyone who needs a support and a friend. Feel free to email me anytime. I look forward to meeting all of you and I wish you all the best!!!! Take care! God bless!!!
I'm a former pre-diabetic (got careless with food and lack of exercise) and I hope I never develop diabetes! My dietician says to keep up the lifestyle change but she and my doctor will not say I won't develop it later. That scares me. Even though I don't have diabetes, I'm here to discuss anything with you and everyone else here on this website. I'm especially interested in learning about what others with Type I and II diabetes eat for meals and snacks, and the different types of exercises they do. I took up ballet and it's really been a lot of fun! Now I'm thinking that perhaps hip hop may be next, as I don't have any place to do most of the ballet exercises ( my condo is a shoebox, with carpet everywhere: I need hard wood floors ). Also, hip hop would give me more of a workout faster. I'm trying to find an affordable dance school that teaches hip hop. I have my mortgage to think about. Keep us posted and email me anytime.
My name is Sara and I am a diabetic - hahaha!
But really, I was born in New York, raised mostly in Southern California, and moved to South Florida for a job.
I was diagnosed in 2002 based off a kidney infection but not put on insulin until 2003 when I was in the ER with a BG of 713 and pretty serious DKA. I took shots for a year and then switched to pumping, and I will sell all my possessions before I ever go back.
I blog at Moments of Wonderful on Wordpress. It started out talking about the random parts of my life and a little about diabetes - now it is mostly about diabetes and a little about the random parts of my life.
When I met B.A.D. George in July he said I had to check out talkfest, so here I am! :)
Hello everyone!
My name is Katie, I am 32 years old, I was dxd with type 1 when I was 2.
I have 2 children, my son is 12 and my daughter will be 14 in September, she also has type 1 that was dxd when she was 5.
I have a Cozmo pump & my daughter will be starting back on her pump in September after having taken a couple years off
her vacation was not a voluntary one, unforunately she decided that since she had the pump, that she didn't need me- and just ran amuck with it (not checking in with me,not testing, bolusing incorrectly or not bolusing at all) Actually ended up in dka a few times before I knew she was doing or not doing. A doctor suggest the I go through the logs I kept, and the memory on her meter and pump, and when I did- boy I was in shock.
I decided that I needed to regain control and took her off the pump, and have given her some time to get healthy and a bit more mature.
I have faith that this time around will be much better for her
