Hi, I'm a newly-diagnosed 15-year-old Type 1 diabetic.
I was just diagnosed this past summer after a horrible sick months of being sick from ketoacidosis. =[
But anyway, as soon as I was diagnosed, I looked up tons of information and basically became a master of knowledge on Type 1 diabetes. I guess I'm just that type of person who needs to know everything about what's going on haha. But I am a very nice, friendly, and talkative person. So if you ever want to talk, I'm up to it! =]
And I'm really glad I found this site because of the cool chat. And just seeing all different kinds of people.

Hello,
My name is Cherise. I'm a 23 year old female turning 24 in April. I am married to Mitch since July 26, 2007. I am a psychology major, artist, and a writer. Right now I live in Salt Lake City, UT. I want to leave with my husband and go some where far away from our families so we can be left alone. They tend to meddle.
I've been Type 1 diabetic since October 2000. It has been an up and down struggle for awhile. I have been what my endocrinologist classified as "brittle". Any little thing including things that are considered "no carbs" affect my blood sugar. We've tried everything from starting with shots to insulin pump to shots. I would still be on the insulin pump if I didn't lose my insurance.
Hi,
I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone. I am a mother of 3 Children. My husband and I have been married for 14 years. I have type 2 diabetes. I developed diabetes about 5 years ago. It is steroid induced. I was on steroids for 6 1/2 years due to another illness I have and it caused my diabetes along with some other problems. I have been off of steroids completely for about 1 1/2 years now. I am interested in meeting others with diabetes and being able to learn from and support one another.
That's very interesting that steroids caused your Type 2 diabetes. I have problems with certain medications affecting my blood sugar like some of the ones for my bipolar disorder (mostly the anti-psychotics). Luckily it can be controlled without medicine. Hope you enjoy your stay here.
I am T2, diet-and-exercise, diagnosed July 2002 with fasting bg of 170, after going to a walk-in clinic with persistently swollen ankles. I was diagnosed with hypertension and dyslipidemia at the same time. I given two diet flyers: one with a 1000-mg/day max sodium diet and an 1800 cal/day ADA diet, and told to try to figure a path between the two of them, plus meds for blood pressure and Glucotrol 5mg for the diabetes.
This totally stunned me as I was only 42, and the only types of diabetes I knew of were "juvenile" (dx before age 20 -- right!) and "geriatric" (well, everyone I knew or knew of who wasn't "juvenile" was over 65!), and the first stage after diagnosis was diet-and-exercise. Why did the idiot doc want me on MEDS????
(OK, Mom was on oral meds, but she was not diagnosed until a few years after she retired, and she did NOT watch her diet. My Other Half was dx'd "borderline" a few years earlier and given a diet flyer, and his insurance sent him a meter to test. Mom never tested, though (still doesn't); she relies only on what the doc tells here.)
My other half's doc explained that the current standard of care is to get bg and A1C down to normal first, using meds, and only afterwards to talk about reducing them if warranted. I am very much anti-pharma, so I had some serious incentive to show everyone I could do it without the meds. (Some bad reactions to the diuretics the docs prescribed didn't help matters any, still have some leftover iatrogenic effects.)
If nothing else, the diagnoses and paucity of information allowed me to go back to eating whole foods and to create a dietary regimen that worked best for me. I lost a considerable amount of weight, and was eventually able to get off the drugs.
In between all this, I've lost a job, had a couple of other jobs, and now am unemployed again and looking for work. Unfortunately the last job, and this cold winter, have resulted in me gaining a lot more weight than I'd like, and eating a lot more poorly than I'd like. The weather is finally getting warm enough to get out and moving...
