gina says (09:10):
hey guys get your questions for susan ready
sugar butt says to (09:10):
is a diet low in carbs a good idea?
Susan Meeke says to (09:10):
I've worked at a Curves before and am familiar with the diet. It's basically a low calorie diet that is high in protein. Carbs though are still important for overall good nutrition. It's a metter of choosing healthy carbs (fruits, veg, whole grains)
*** (09:10):Welcome to Susan Meeke Chat , mhelfstein@mac.com !

tonka43 says to (09:11):
maybe processed food?
Susan Meeke says to (09:11):
How low in carbs? Our bodies/brains use about 130 grams of carbs per day. Anything below that is not nutritionally balanced.
wingspirit says to (09:11):
but what about the starches
dwendel says to (09:12):
so then what about dr Bernstien and his low carb diet??
dwendel says to (09:12):
I don't agree with what he does but understand it
sugar butt says to (09:12):
i'm under 5 feet tall and average weight -- my dietician really cut my carbs
dwendel says to (09:12):
curious to hear your opinion
Susan Meeke says to (09:12):
Processed food includes most foods that come in packages- chips, cookies, cereals, snack foods. Unprocessed are those that are as close to nature as you can get- an apple vs applesauce for example is a better choice.
gina says (09:12):
lets give susan a chance to answer

ahhh
*** (09:12):Becky6783 quit the room

i didnt realize that ahah
Greg Borkman says to (09:13):
wait wait wait...i average about 350 carbs a day but i gain no weight
Greg Borkman says to (09:13):
why is that?
sugar butt says to (09:13):
i tried bernstein, found it to be too unreasonable -- no wonder people have a hard time following
gina says (09:13):
you need carbs and protein, fruits, milks etc...you cant just eat protein
Susan Meeke says to (09:14):
Look at the package the starches are in. Starch from white bread is less healthy than stach from brown rice for example. Starch from beans is better than starch in a biscuit. Brown rice and beans are loaded with nutrients that white flour foods don't have.

i will be back soon hopefully, im being called away
gina says (09:15):
do you not recommend those kind of diets?
Susan Meeke says to (09:15):
I am not totally familiar with Dr Bernstein's diet, but our bodies are made of carbs, protein and fat among other things. We get antioxidants and fiber from carbohdyrate foods, so we want to include the healthy one's in the diet.

any advice on the "farmer's market diet" and guessing carbs? I'm trying to eat mostly local foods and it's more challenging!

A Farmer's market diet is a great idea! I support local foods anytime I can. A small piece of fruit the size of a tennis ball is around 15 g/carb. I don't have people count carbs in their non-starchy veggies.
gina says (09:19):
and you add in yogurts, milks, fruits cheeses, veggies with everything
tonka43 says to (09:19):
You have to watch the sodium on the prepackaged meals.

kemakinson says to (09:21):
with pregnancy, is it true it's a good idea to keep carbs at a minimum for blood sugar spikes? I had a doctor that said very few carbs and then he shows up at the hospital 9 months later with a dozen krispy kreme donuts...
sugar butt says to (09:21):
gina, how much do you work out?
gina says (09:21):
4 times a week
gina says (09:21):

gina says (09:22):

any tips on that susan?
gina says (09:22):
i am eating 6 times a day
gina says (09:22):
small meals
Susan Meeke says to (09:23):
When pregnant I advise women to eat around 30 g/carbs each meal and 15-30 for snacks- 3 meals/3 snacks. Limiting carbs too much can cause ketone production. Also include a little protein with the carbs.
Susan Meeke says to (09:23):
Any tips on what? the glucoshots, exercise, weight?
Greg Borkman says to (09:23):
i dont work out enough...i eat healthfully (no trans fat, less than 10g of sat a day, and no red meat) but my a1c is incredible with no regular lows (5.4)....when will i start to loose this good metabolism? im 21 now
gina says (09:23):

gina says (09:23):
why am i not losing
gina says (09:23):
i only lost 3 pounds in 8 weeks on jenny

i think its because of lows
PowerPumper says to (09:24):
you sound like a flatliner greg, you'll prolly always stay good.
Susan Meeke says to (09:24):
Are you only doing cardio? If so, add strength training to the mix.
gina says (09:24):
i was doing both
gina says (09:24):
but i thought maybe if i just stuck to cardio that would help me lose faster
gina says (09:24):
is that wrong?
Susan Meeke says to (09:24):
I used to run a lot and my weight stayed the same. I started working at Curves and working out there rather than run and I lost weight. Sometimes your body needs a change.
PowerPumper says to (09:25):
too many carbs in my opinion
wingspirit says to (09:25):
i have lost 12 lbs
Susan Meeke says to (09:25):
Our bodies adapt to what we do and it's no longer a challenge. Change it up.
gina says (09:25):
im not eating that many carbs for the amount of cardio i do
sugar butt says to (09:25):
gina, try to be more consistent w exercise, perhaps 6 to 7 time per weeks, does not have to be whole hour of cardio. they say consistency is better than just 4 times a week
Nyx says to (09:25):
Gina do you also have PCOS? polycystic ovarian syndrom? that can effect ones ablity to get teh weight off, plus getting and staying preggers
Greg Borkman says to (09:25):

sugar butt says to (09:50):
toll free?
kemakinson says to (09:50):
has anyone been to Diabetes Training camp?
Susan Meeke says to (09:51):
Go to Facebook and become a fan of Fit4D. That's the best way to get information.
gina says (09:51):
diabetes training camp? NOOOO
sugar butt says to (09:51):
no, what is that?
Susan Meeke says to (09:51):
The call in number is not toll free, but you can use VOIP with a headset and your computer speaker.
wingspirit says to (09:51):
i'm too old for that
kemakinson says to (09:51):
It's a pretty cool camp from what I've heard...really focused on diabetes and exercise
kemakinson says to (09:51):
but pretty expensive
kemakinson says to (09:52):
I've put a lot of work into analyzing the effects of exercise on my blood sugars...but I think the ex. physiologists and doctors there have it much more down to a "science"...if that's at all possible with diabetes!!!
Susan Meeke says to (09:53):
Diabetes is some science and lots of art.
gina says (09:53):
yea
kemakinson says to (09:53):
lots of art!
sugar butt says to (09:53):
i agree
gina says (09:53):
susan do you have diabetes
Susan Meeke says to (09:54):
My goal is diabetes prevention. I have a strong family history of type 2 and one cousin with type 1.
Susan Meeke says to (09:54):
So no, I do not have diabetes.
sugar butt says to (09:54):
i'm susceptible to type 2
gina says (09:55):
everyone there are 5 minutes left of the chat so if you have any other questions for susan now is your chance
wingspirit says to (09:56):
Susan, thank you for your information
sugar butt says to (09:56):
what is the best type of ecercise for pre and diabetes?
Susan Meeke says to (09:56):
Y'all had some great questions and feedback.
tonka43 says to (09:56):
This is one of the best hours I have spent.
Susan Meeke says to (09:56):
Any consistent exercise is the best exercise. Cardio- at least 150 minutes per week and 2-3 days/week of strength training.
Susan Meeke says to (09:57):
Thanks for the great compliment tonka43!
sugar butt says to (09:57):
thank you susan, i had a great time!
kemakinson says to (09:57):

gina says (09:58):
yes give us words of wisdom!
tonka43 says to (09:58):
One day at a time.
Susan Meeke says to (09:58):
Me too. I love working with people who have diabetes. You all teach me so much. Thank you for letting me participate.
Susan Meeke says to (09:58):
I agree- one day at a time.
gina says (09:58):
no problem susan we love having you!
Susan Meeke says to (09:58):
One of my favorite things to say is- don't expect to be perfect!
gina says (09:58):
easier said than done!
Susan Meeke says to (09:59):
You are going to have both good and bad days.
sugar butt says to (09:59):
we're all trying to be almost perfect?
sugar butt says to (09:59):
sometimes?
Susan Meeke says to (09:59):
Do the best you can at least 80% of the time and leave some wiggle room.
tonka43 says to (09:59):
If you have a high BG don't get mad just correct and move on.
sugar butt says to (10:00):
yes tonka
wingspirit says to (10:00):
good advise
sugar butt says to (10:00):
away we go!
Susan Meeke says to (10:00):
That's right Tonka. Those numbers are just data. They are not a reflection of how good or bad you are/were.
gina says (10:00):
it is hard to no worry about the numbers though
gina says (10:01):
especially now when i am trying to get it down just to get pregnany
gina says (10:01):
pregnant
Susan Meeke says to (10:01):
Right- but what do worry and stress do? Maybe raise them even more.
gina says (10:01):
true
sugar butt says to (10:01):
play with a baby
Susan Meeke says to (10:02):
Playing with a baby = exercise/activity = stress relief = :P

true
gina says (10:02):

wingspirit says to (10:02):
how about great grand children
Susan Meeke says to (10:02):
Kids are a great way to keep active.
Nyx says to (10:03):
id say the would depend on if children stress you out to start with
tonka43 says to (10:03):
Even things that do not seem like exercise count such as cleaning.
Susan Meeke says to (10:04):
Good point. Speaking of...it's past my little guy's bedtime and it's my job to tuck him in. I had fun tonight!
sugar butt says to (10:04):
rushing from store to store in a mall
Andy Barnes says to (10:04):
