All About Gina...

Here is the scoop on me.

Well I was diagnosed with Type 1 on November 25, 2000 and I was 25. It is a hard struggle every day but, I am trying to get through with the support of family, friends and people like YOU!

I love meeting new people and finding out what makes them tick. I can talk in instant messages for hours with my partner Jon about anything. He is my online BFF (best friend forever).

Other random things about me are that I love to draw & paint. I went to school for Fine Arts and my minor was computer graphics. I work in Manhattan for a publishing company where I am the art director for one of the magazines. Which means that I layout the pages and do all the art work and front pages. It is a lot of fun and can at times be very stressful (not good for blood sugar). But the cool part is we always get it done! And it is very rewarding when the magazine comes out and it looks great because you sit back realizing how hard you and your team worked on it. Such a great feeling.

Oh yea the best random rant of all is that next year I am getting married to the best guy ever and I wish the wedding was tomorrow. He helps me so much with all this diabetes crap. Really I don't know how he puts up with my mood swings and lows and just being a woman in general ahaha. Patience of a saint I guess. haha

Anyway, that is a little glimpse of what I am about. What ABOUT YOU.

Help!!! Exercise Fanatics Inquire within

I need advice. What do you all do to prevent a low at the gym. I know I keep harping on this subject but I seem to really be struggling.

Last night I turned my pump to a 50% basal an hour before working out. I checked my blood it was at 115 before going into the class, so I took some sips of Gatorade and turned my pump to a basal of 0% for the remainder of the time I would be working out just like the diabetes team told me to do.

Halfway through the class I am in, I am sweating. Not your usual… Continue

New Husband, New Gym, New Lows

Now that I am a married woman my new “husband” (so weird to say that) and I go to the gym to pump some iron together. Its really fun, he became my trainer by default, and the best part… I don’t have to pay him! Well, not with money anyway (haha).

Rewind to Monday night. We got to the gym and I really wanted to do cardio since I haven’t really done any aerobic type workout in almost three weeks. Big M went to the weights and I hopped on an elliptical.

Before I left the house my BS was 137 and I… Continue

Another Gym Fiasco

Sunday morning I woke up to go to my training session at the gym. She had me doing a new routine of strength training/cardio combo. After twenty minutes I started getting so tired, I could hardly lift my tired body. Then all of a sudden, I start feeling really nauseated. Which is not an odd thing for me because sometimes I feel like that during a gym workout.

So, because of how tired and weird I started to feel I checked my blood. 221. Then, my mouth starts to water. You know the feeling, right… Continue

Pain and No Gain!

Working out is hard I tell ya. You go
on the machines, you pump some iron, you take cardio classes. You lose
4 inches on your waist! Hold on before you get happy for me, there is
more.

I actually didn’t believe them when the told me today at the gym when I got measured. She said You lost 4 inches and I said oh really?

Why am I not excited? Well that is because I have been working out since umm September and I lost a total of ummm 2 pounds!

Hi, Gina! I'm doing pretty well. I chose home dialysis for a lot of reasons, but one of the biggies was being able to set my own schedule. (The fact that it didn't have the negative cardiovascular outcomes of in-center hemo helped a lot, too.) I appreciate this more than you can have any idea unless you have a lot of friends whose schedules are set for them by a dialysis clinic.

The fact that I can set my own schedule is allowing me to go back to school and get retrained in a field other than software test engineering, as I have been disabled out of that field. I did my first quarter back to school and just got grades on Thursday. I earned a 4.0 in both my classes (one of them math). Go me.

I spent an awful lot of time studying while connected up to the machine at night. Dialysis sucks a lot but at least I could use some of that time productively.

Now I'm helping to organize a rally for single payer health care at the end of June, as well as getting prepared for summer session, which starts on Monday.

I absolutely hate diabetes.... really want a cure.. having 2 kids with Type 1 drives me NUTS. I just wish they had more people in their "circles" to talk to about the disease other than me....

Hi Gina,
In regards to diabetes and celiac, I wish I could attend the chat, but my husband and I will be at an event. It's also his B-day that evening. Will there be a copy of a transcript?

The pics from your wedding look awesome.. 8^) Its always nice to see good things happening to folks.. Also, nice to hear the diet and working out is working out. I fell off for a bit, but have shaved ( chopped ) about 15 pounds off since Valentines day. Granted, that's after giving up my losses from last summer...

Also, replacing fat with heavier muscle is never a bad thing.. 100% good stuff.. Muscle burns more calories just sitting around being muscle, and even more when being used..

Adjusting to NH well. Winters are very rough but the other seasons are beautiful. Restoring our farmhouse ... how about you?
