Hi Leonie,
I was diagnosed in 1969 at before my 2nd birthday. My mom had a tough job but she is the one I give credit to (and my Lord Jesus) for the relatively good health I have today. She trusted her insticts - learned the physical signs of highs and lows (we had to test urine until i was 12). She gave me a low carb high fiber diet before it became standard practice in the 80s. My mom wasn't the best cook but I ate a lot of steamed vegs, brown bread/rice, oatmeal and never ate anything fried. I learned to cook in 8th grade home ec and discovered herbs/spices!!!! That helped and so did the glucometer. I did sports, went to college, lived in Europe and had a healthy baby 5 years ago. You tell yourself and your daughter that she can do anything she wants to - my dad didnt do much or understand too much about the diabetes but he and my mom told me often that I was smart and could do anything I wanted. Belief is very important .....I had several ill advised drs and some nurses who gave too much emphasis on the negative and I had to struggle with negative beliefs about life with diabetes. Learn as much as you can and stay positive for your daughter.
