Breakfast this morning was a chocolate flavored protein shake. 2 scoops of protein powder, 1/2 scoop of fiber powder, 9 oz of water, and a teaspoon of flax oil all mixed in the blender. Took about 5 minutes to prepare, drink, and rinse out the blender.
This was followed by a detox tea which I am still sipping on. Next meal is in 4-6 hours. I am thinking chicken salad. Cage-free boneless skinless organic chicken breasts, organic veggies: lettuce, baby spinach, shredded carrots, sliced onions, cr…

It has been a few years now since I posted anything. Mainly because as my son got older I became less involved in his diabetes management. He is now 18 and feeling very independent. His diabetes management could still use some work, but I think he will be okay in the long run.
The reason I am starting this up again is because I am starting a dietary cleanse that I thought might be of interest to somebody out there. It is something my chiropractor recommended to me, and I tried it a few months a…

This will most likely be my final post on this blog, mainly due to lack of interest (my own). I started this blog last December. Christmas Eve if I remember correctly. I was frustrated
beyond belief. Nothing was going well. I really didn’t think my son
would live to see high school graduation. I was frustrated with my job.
I was frustrated with all of the problems caused by my sons school.
Most of all I was frustrated that the one piece of technology that
could really make

Chris returned from camp in good spirits and with new friends. He was home for a couple of weeks, and then it was time to return to camp. This time he would not be lounging around
the summer camp though, Chris and a select group of 5 other teens with
diabetes are climbing Mt. Whitney, the tallest mountain in California.
The peak is at something like 14,000 ft. He arrived at camp on
Saturday, and Sunday morning they started up the mountain. They should
be reaching the peak s

I just drove 5 hours each way to pick up Chris from Bearskin Meadows summer camp. Him and 5 other diabetic teens and a few counselors spent the last week and a half climbing to the
peak of Mt. Whitney, the tallest mountain in the continental United
States. Chris did not want to go on this trip, and I half expected to
hear him complain all the way home about how hard it was, but I was
really suprised to hear that he totally loved it. He had a great time
up there, and one of

Chris is leaving tomorrow for camp. It will be 10 days of me not having to think about blood sugars or carbs or insulin. It will be great. For 10 days I will have a life. No messes
around the house, no television blaring. It will be just me and Buster
kicking back, enjoying life. Maybe I will drink some Pina Coladas after
work or something just to make sure I take full advantage of the
situation. I will invite my friends over for beers. Maybe I am getting
a little carried a

Chris woke up with ketones a few days ago. His bg was 190. Although a little high, that is not high enough to explain ketones. I told him to bolus a correction and check again in an
hour. Of course I told him this over the phone because I was on my way
to the union hall. I am trying to go back to work finally.
When I got back home, his bg had dropped to 111 and the ketones went from moderate to small. Since this is finals week for him, I took him to
school.

I was taking my morning walk with Buster, my 3 month old Beagle puppy, to the coffee house down the street. As I was standing at the walk-up window, a man in a security outfit walked
by and saw the dog. He crouched down and was playing with Buster, the
way most people do when they see him. Buster is very popular. He then
got up and walked off towards the parking lot next door where he is in
charge of watching the cars. As he left, one of the girls behind the
counter said “O

Allison just showed me an article on About.com http://diabetes.about.com/ talking about the Diabetes OC awards and recognizing Kerri www.sixuntilme.com and AmyT
www.diabetesmine.com as OC awards winners. It is great to see them get
the recognition they deserve! It was also nice to see the OC awards
described as “coveted”. Allison has worked hard to bring all of the D
blogs together and there are so many talented writers there sharing
their experiences.

Chris is doing a much better job of testing regularly now. I realize that when I posted last I was frustrated, and I made it sound like it was worse than it really is. It is not all about punishment here, but I have started taking away privileges. This is more about his school work than anything else. It
was also an excuse to not have the television on so much. It seemed
that the tv was on any time Chris was at home and it was driving me
crazy. So tv is now a reward that he

I neglected this blog again, not because of stress or being busy, but I think because after finally accomplishing everything I set out to do my brain kind of went in to shut-down mode. I have just been taking it easy and trusting my son to
take it from here. Big mistake.
My son lacks discipline. I guess it is my fault for being too easy on him. In the last week he has tested his blood sugar about 15 times. He is supposed to do it 5 times a day. One day he actually we

Tomorrow will be the 1-week anniversary of the marriage between Chris and his pump. All is well. His numbers have climbed some, but not bad. I think this is because we are not
testing quite as often as we were the first couple of days. We still
need to fine tune his settings, but he has only had a couple of lows,
and they were not bad.
Chris’s mom, who also has type 1, called me last night. We have been divorced since 1998. She has no medical insurance. She called be

Second attempt at posting tonight. I started typing, and Buster (the puppy) decided he could help by resting his head and one paw on the keyboard. On top of IM’ing somebody some
garbage, he also somehow caused the window to go back a page, deleting
everything I had typed. Oh well. I rubbed his belly for a few minutes
and he fell asleep. All is peaceful now.
Last night, I got very little sleep. I was only going to check Chris’s bg every 4 hours, but he kept dropping l

8:30 this morning we began our appointment. The CDE went over a few basics with us to make sure we understood the basics of pumping, and then she had him hook up.
Yesterday he took his last lantus shot in the morning, so that today it
would be running out just in time to start pumping. When I checked his
bg at 4:00 this morning, it was 458. I had him take a correction shot
of novolog and when he woke up 3 hours later it was down to 225. Sounds
horrible, but those are the no

We had the second pump class today. Chris has been wearing his pump for a couple of weeks now. The trainer came out and hooked him up. He was pumping saline. Next Thursday is the big
day where he will begin pumping insulin.
His Diabetes Educator wants him to switch his Lantus to mornings so that it will be wearing off just in time for his appointment Thursday morning. This is
always tricky, but we have done it before. It involves a lot of
testing.

I know, I have totally neglected this blog lately. Thanks everybody for your kind comments! A lot has happened this year so far and it has been a little overwhelming. Who
would have thought that they would transfer my son into high school in
the middle of the second semester? Who would have thought that right
after that he would finally receive the pump we have tried for so many
years to get? Monday the pump trainer will be here. It will be spring
break at his school next w

I actually wasn’t sure if I wanted to post about this, because I have been disappointed so many times. I can’t even count how many times I have been told that they were going to order a pump at the next appointment. But I got a call from the Minimed rep yesterday, and the
pump will be here tomorrow. We got a smoke colored 715.
I owe a big thanks to Gary Scheiner and Judy Tripathi of Integrated Diabetes Services www.integrateddiabetes.com, for helping persuade the Kaiser team to go thro

I went to the air show at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento yesterday, and I have to say the highlight of the trip was meeting Michael Hunter. For those who don’t know who he is, he is the world’s
only type 1 certified stunt plane pilot. He autographed a picture for
Chris, and talked to him a little. I don’t know what he told him, but
Chris has had a different attitude ever since. Chris has always wanted
to be a pilot, and has been told several times that the FAA will not
let him because of

I am wasting my time with these doctor visits. As I mentioned in my last post, the only person standing between my son and a pump is the dietitian. She is now convinced that he can count carbs, and she is happy that he has been able to keep his carbs-per-meal down below 100
grams. So why haven’t they ordered a pump? His blood sugar is too high.
Yes, you read that right. The best tool in the world for lowering blood
sugar can not be given to somebody with high blood sugar. Now I have to

I got a call from the Diabetic Nurse Educator. She finally got back from vacation and was returning my call. She told me that the Endo would not prescribe a pump until the dietician thought he was ready. Now I am no medical expert, but it seems to me that a dietician should have absolutely nothing to do
with whether or not somebody gets an insulin pump. Has the whole world gone
crazy, or is it just me? Because I would believe either one at this point.
The dietician did not allow him to
