Linking Diabetics Coast 2 Coast

Sunday morning I woke up to go to my training session at the gym. She had me doing a new routine of strength training/cardio combo. After twenty minutes I started getting so tired, I could hardly lift my tired body. Then all of a sudden, I start feeling really nauseated. Which is not an odd thing for me because sometimes I feel like that during a gym workout.

So, because of how tired and weird I started to feel I checked my blood. 221. Then, my mouth starts to water. You know the feeling, right before you are about to vomit. I run to the bathroom and yes, I puke.

The trainer came into the bathroom after a little bit asking if I was ok. I told her I felt better. After I came out from visiting the porcelain god, she asks G, you pregnant? Im like umm NOOOOO. I’m really not I swear!

I cut my gym session short because I felt like total and complete crappol-a.

Anyway, just curious to know if anyone else gets the chunks at the gym. I heard some people do, but, how do I prevent feeling that way during a workout? Its really ANNOYING!

Gina, I barely had a sick day in my life when all of a sudden I was slammed out of the blue. I was diagnosed with high blood sugar first. Then I was hit with a little gem called Tolosa-Hunt Syndrome, followed by by a deep venous thrombosis that caused a pulmonary embolism (blood clot) in my lower left chest, followed by another becasue they let me out of the hospital before being stabilized. I tell you all this for one reason. Never, never give up. Having always been hard working and self reliant, the hardest part for me was to learn to let others help me, to surrender my pride and say that things that were easy for me I now needed help with. You know what to do if your sugars are whacked. A steroid run for my Tolosa-Hunt blew my sugars away, so I shot insulin until it was over. Just physical stuff, easily handled. Ivan's exactly right. Don't give up your workouts. Modify them if you need to. I went from weights to walking, and thank goodness I have two dogs that live to walk and make me get up and go. We walk twice a day for a total of about four miles. My docor says that's good stuff. I guess I mainly want to say that you should never be afraid to ask for help. Your friends will love you for it. I'm blessed in my family, they won't let me get down or give up. If this kind of thing builds character, then we all ought to be quite the characters when it's all over. :-) I hope I haven't bored anybody too badly, and I wish all of you the best.

ouch,

Thanks to a few bouts of DKA when I was a kid I now have the worlds most sensitive gag reflex. When you start feeling like crap stop early on, have some refreshing water and check your blood. I am not sure what could have been running you that high during workout but its less than handy. The nausea and feeling tired could have been getting caused by some mild hypoxia. Working out especially if you are doing cardio you are going to be burning a lot of o2. The thing is as your blood sugar climbs above normal there is a proportionate drop in how well red blood cells can carry o2. Yea, there is plenty of air and you are breathing fine but the cells in your muscles are still getting starved because the red blood cells are not up to the task.
You might consider starting the workout with a blood sugar that is closer to normal and bring some easy emergency pick me up along. Finishing a workout a bit low and needing to eat is not a bad thing either.

Don't give up, working out is good stuff...

Ivan!
